ANTIAGO, Chile—A blaze at a prison in the San Miguel area of Chile's capital killed 83 inmates and left 21 inmates or guards hospitalized, President Sebastian Pinera said.
Deadly Fire in Chilean Prison
The fire broke out around 4 a.m. local time Wednesday after a fight among inmates. Prison crowding contributed to the high death toll, Mr. Pinera said. The prison was built to house about 1,000 inmates, but nearly 2,000 inmates are being held there.
The fire, which was confined to the fourth floor at the No. 5 tower of the San Miguel prison, was put out Wednesday morning after firefighters rushed to the prison, said Fernando Echeverria, the regional governor for Metropolitan Santiago.
Overcrowding is common in Chilean prisons, and the government for years has been building new prisons to address the problem. Chilean prisons currently have the capacity to hold about 30,000 inmates, but actually house roughly 53,000 inmates.
"This is a problem that has been around for a very long time. We have a penitentiary system that isn't worthy of our country," Mr. Pinera told reporters outside one of the state hospitals where the injured had been rushed. Officials said the death toll could increase since 14 of the injured suffered severe trauma.
The accident comes in the aftermath of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the nation in February and the August cave-in that left 33 miners trapped for 70 days under the Atacama desert. This latest tragedy is expected to fuel changes to the prison system.
"The conditions of the prison system are extremely inhuman and we're going to give prison reform a bigger push," Mr. Pinera said in a televised news conference, flanked by Justice Minister Felipe Bulnes and Health Minister Jaime Manalich.
Since the Pinera administration took office in March, Mr. Bulnes has repeatedly said his ministry would seek to overhaul the current prison system.
Coincidentally, the San Miguel fire occurred on the anniversary of the worst fire in Chilean history, which occurred in 1863 and killed more than 2,000 people. It led to the creation of the National Firefighters Corp., Mr. Pinera said. In Chile, firefighters are all volunteers.
Hundreds of family members of the San Miguel inmates rushed to the prison early Wednesday and then to several state hospitals in the hopes of obtaining news about their loved ones, state television TVN reported.
